Glenwood Canyon
Many motorcyclists do their best to avoid interstate highways, but in Colorado there are some spots along the super-slab that are just too good to miss. Glenwood Canyon, which comes out at Glenwood Springs on the west end, is one of these.
One of the last stretches to be completed on the original interstate system, Glenwood Canyon was a major battleground between environmental and road-building interests. Through years of negotiation and redesign, a plan was devised that minimized environmental and aesthetic damage to the canyon. Not coincidentally, this was one of the most expensive stretches of road in the entire interstate system. The result is a roadway that itself wins plaudits for beauty, and the sheer, red rock beauty of the canyon remains intact.
